Why Is My Home Not Selling? Part 6: Does Your Home Have Curb Appeal

Why Is My Home Not Selling? Part 6: Does Your Home Have Curb Appeal

The first showing your home gets today doesn’t happen in person. It happens on a screen.

Your Online Photos Are the New Curb Appeal

Buyers scroll through photos and descriptions first. If they like what they see, the next step used to be a drive-by. Now I’m seeing more buyers research a home before they ever get in the car at all, some starting their search on Google Maps to get a feel for the neighborhood, and increasingly, some are actually starting with AI tools, typing in exactly what they want, square footage, bedrooms, bathrooms, taxes, county information, and getting results back before they’ve looked at a single listing photo on their own.

But if a buyer does make it to the drive-by stage, your exterior has one job: don’t give them a reason to leave without getting out of the car. A neighbor’s cluttered yard, toys left out, dead landscaping, a dirty exterior that’s never been power washed, any of it is enough for a buyer to make a snap judgment and simply move on to the next listing. Here’s the part that stings: you can have the cleanest, best-maintained interior on the block, but if the outside looks neglected, buyers assume the inside is worse. It’s an unfair assumption, but it’s the one they’ll make anyway.

The Cheapest Fix With the Biggest Impact

If you do nothing else, replace every burnt-out light bulb in the house, and switch to LED bulbs in every room you can. A bright home reads as clean, cared-for, and move-in ready. I’ve never once had a buyer complain that a home was too bright, and buyers can always add a dimmer if it’s more than they want. But I’ve had plenty of buyers comment that a home felt dark, and that impression sticks with them even after they leave.

A Minnesota Winter Problem Worth Watching

If you’re selling during a Minnesota winter, keep an eye on ice dams. Don’t let them sit. A simple trick that actually works: fill an old sock with ice-melting salt and toss it up onto the ice dam. It’ll melt through naturally without damaging your roof, and it’s a lot cheaper than waiting until it becomes a bigger problem or paying for a professional removal you didn’t need to.

The Bottom Line

In a market where buyers form an opinion about your home before they ever pull into the driveway, sometimes before they even leave their own house, curb appeal isn’t optional anymore. A clean, well-lit, cared-for exterior gets buyers through the front door. A neglected one gives them every excuse they need to keep scrolling.
